Components of Literacy Parent Presentation

Designing appropriate literacy instruction requires that reading/literacy specialists understand the stages of language development. Language instruction should focus on the components of language, including language acquisition, structure of language, conventions of standard English, vocabulary acquisition and use, speaking, listening, viewing, and visually representing.

For this assignment, select a grade range and create a 10-12 slide digital presentation for parents to explain language development and the components of literacy. Include in your presentation:

  • Description of the stages of language development
  • Description of the five components of literacy (phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension)
  • Examples of classroom activities for students at your selected grade range that would address two of components of literacy.
  • 2-3 at-home activities families might implement with students who are struggling with language and literacy.
  • Title slide, reference slide, and presenter's notes.
